A Night to Remember... Remember

The Twilight Sad's James Graham elbows his way down the front to see Remember Remember blow the roof off Stereo

It's the fifth of November and outside in Glasgow it's not the usual type of rocket that can be heard on the street. The sky is alight with fireworks and I take in a pre-show amateur display where a friend of mine, who will remain unnamed [AKA The Twilight Sad's keys man Martin "Dok" Doherty - ed], nearly blows up a ned before attending Remember Remember's Stereo gig, which also happens to be principal member Graeme Ronald's 30th birthday party.

Having seen Remember Remember quite a few times – both as a full band and as Graeme performing on his own – I've never been disappointed. With the release of their new RR Scorpii EP, and the occasion itself, I was particularly looking forward to this gig. The set starts off with a projection on the Stereo wall of the amazing 11-and-a-half minute video for Imagining Things, directed by Gregor Barclay and featuring Graeme as a werewolf – so good I watched it again with a brutal hangover the next day.

The band played songs from the debut album, the EP and some brand new tracks that built up my anticipation for a new full-length album even more. There was a point during one where I felt like I was in a scene from the Wickerman, as windmills started spinning on the speakers at the side of the stage and the band got even more intense as the song reached its peak.

There were also pyrotechnics, with Graeme firing confetti and spinning glittery things into the crowd. But tonight wasn't just a band going on stage and running through their songs; between the audio and visuals it felt like a well thought-out performance, reminding me exactly what a gig should be and that this band are one of the best – live and on record – in Scotland today. One of my favourite gigs of the year, and definitely a night to remember...remember. Ooft!

Remember Remember play Electric Circus, Edinburgh on 25 Nov and support Belle and Sebastian at Barrowland, Glasgow on 19 Dec
