The JD Set: Hugh Cornwell & Art Brut @ ABC, Glasgow, 11 Nov

Article by Euan Ferguson | 06 Nov 2008

For the last six years, the JD Sets have broken a few boundaries by showcasing edgy, up-and-coming acts and pairing them with alternative icons from a different era. Last year’s shows saw New Order’s low-slung bassist Peter Hook hook up with The Wombats for their indie disco hit Let’s Dance to Joy Division. The idea is to highlight the continuities in British music over the years and pay respect to some of the real innovators who got us where we are today. In other words, thank Hooky for The Wombats.

This year, the Glasgow JD set is curated by Hugh Cornwell - formerly of proto-punks the Stranglers - who was turning out genre-defying albums before any of these upstarts were even born. He'll share the stage with shouty art-pop outsiders Art Brut for a new look at some of the Stranglers’ classic singles. Support comes from epic Cornish indie trio Rosie and the Goldbug.
