Sushi Tap Show @ Sweet Grassmarket

Feature by Laurin Campbell | 25 Aug 2010

Not for the strict aesthete, the Sushi Tap Show requires a sense of humour and a penchant for slapstick. Tokyo Tap Do!’s performance is less dance and more light-hearted comedy but the audience seems to enjoy it. Expect to be amused by their eccentricities but not astounded by feats of technical genius.

A series of gimmick-laden sketches rather than dance routines are presented. The two performers, Pokei and Maki, energetically convey characters through their physicality in this fun-driven piece. Whatever the part, they approach it with passion and drive. Their quirky personalities and awkward grasp of English make them inescapably endearing.

Despite the language barrier, the performers happily interact with the audience as they encourage them to become part of the show. The audience clap along to rhythms, cheer on juggling acts and create a drum roll to support a particularly challenging hoop trick. The close proximity of audience and performers allows for a personal connection that encourages a fondness for the work even though the dance is somewhat lacking.

When tap is used it is basic but effective in terms of humour. In one sketch, Maki, dressed as a conductor, repeats a short sequence of simple steps as the music quickens. The gathering pace makes for a comic routine as she struggles to make it to the end of the piece without stopping to catch her breath. Quaintly entertaining, this act typifies the lightweight performance style of Tokyo Tap Do!.
