Interno 10/B @C Venues
Flat sharing, Italian style
Moving in with people? It’s awkward in the beginning while you suss each other out, but suddenly you have in-jokes and hey presto: you’re a gang. Anyone who has ever shared a flat will identify with Interno 10/B.
Through a mix of choregraphed dance and improvisation, LT Dance Project, nine girls from Italy, explore what it means to be thrust into close quarters with strangers, who become flatmates, and finally, friends.
While the improvisation is less convincing, the choreography is strong and LT Dance Project aren’t afraid to experiment. The soundtrack begins with a hoover being dutifully pushed by one of the company, setting up the domesticity of the scene. Familiar, perhaps, but it is far from ordinary.
Interno 10/B works best when they dance as an ensemble and one sequence in pitch black is particularly thrilling. Holding torches, the girls’ faint silhouettes are just visible, the movement of a shoulder or the flash of an ankle just seen, caught in a torch beam. You can only guess at the rest of the movement in the dark and it’s exciting.
Not forgetting the company's Italian roots and - proving their comedy credentials - this may be the first time a plate of spaghetti has featured in contemporary dance. Not to spoilt the fun, but twisting spaghetti onto a fork has never looked so cool.
For those who like their dance with a twist and a little Italian glamour: don’t forget your sunglasses for the finale.
