An Interview with Tom Dale

Feature by Tom Dale | 20 Aug 2011

For the past few years, Tom Dale has become a one of the Fringe's most familiar choreographers. His seasons at Zoo venues have showcased his anxious, dubstep inflected take on dance. This year, Dale has choreographed for 2Faced Dance and made something new for Dance Base.

What made you shift to a piece that is more of an installation this year?

The installation format lets the audience into the performance world we are creating, to bring them inside. The four walls of our creation were important as the piece has to be experienced three dimensionally. Only by being close to the action and able to change your perspective and roam around the space will you be able to fully appreciate the work and contemplate our theme.

What do you hope that an audience will experience?

I believe this will be enchanting to be a part of: to see it from just a few feet away will be a rare and voyeuristic experience. I do accept though that it is sometimes nice to sit down to fully enjoy the experience and I have tried to accommodate that by creating a 15-20 minute section towards the end which is best viewed from one side of the space where we have put some benches!

Why do you bring dance to Edinburgh every August?

I bring dance to the festival because there is a huge number of curious people out there. Not everyone likes only one type of thing. For example, people ask me what kind of music do I like, well the honest answer is I like all kinds but only the good stuff in each genre!

The Edinburgh Festival offers a place for people to find good stuff easily and I think people are getting excited by the different forms of expression and experiences that are out there. I think sometimes people will take a chance. I hope they do with this piece of ours as I know they will not have experienced much like it before. I’m confident the work will affect them in a positive way.
