Cape Dance Company @ Zoo Roxy

Cape Dance Company deliver high energy, precision and entertainment.

The show opens with the classically influenced Treasures Of The Heart, a charming, fast-paced romp through ancient myths, that employs various group combinations, from solos to quartets.

This is followed by i-Dolls, choreographed by Mamela Nyamza, a witty and amusing piece that merges the completion of Treasures into a dressing room scene, which becomes a model photo-shoot. The cast’s skill at character acting now comes to the fore, as the wannabe models preen themselves, pose for the camera and fight for their chance at fame. Combined with the excellent ensemble work – disciplined to the last detail - this is top class fun.

The pace doesn’t slacken with On The Wings Of Sue – a series of sexy dances to prove definitively that CDC can do smouldering and giving the male dancers scope for some high energy displays.

Finally, there is the longer ‘Indela’, choreographed by Sbonakaliso Ndaba, which is large ensemble piece with various group sequences and including djembe drums.

Overall, the show’s a little too focussed on entertainment – it would have been great to see the talented cast take on another acting piece, or stretching into something more thought provoking. But I suspect CDC will have a full house every day. And well deserved too.
