Arms straights, legs like pistons: from Ireland to the heart of the Fringe

Riverdance – love it or loathe it – put Irish dancing firmly on the map. It opened the eyes of the world to the skilled form and it has grown with startling popularity in the years since. This year, the Fringe will get a taste of the lilting yet energetic style of Irish Dancing with Absolutely Legless taking to the stage.

Formed in 1997 by Dianne Newman, the Edinburgh based troupe of over 25 dancers and musicians – ages spanning from teens to those in their fifties – will perform original dances to evocative traditional Irish music.

Newman explains that this is “a show packed full of original and traditional Irish music, song and dance with two pieces specifically created for this year’s fringe show." Having a live band is important to the group: “the whole show works with live music, so is of interest to both dance and traditional music addicts alike." And it is a welcome return to performing in the capital for the group. “Being part of the overall hype and excitement is something to be proud of. When you go on stage for the first time at the Fringe, you always get that buzz of something really special," she concludes. Absolutely Legless looks set to be one to tap your toes to.
