Deep Blue

Not the place for a rowdy evening, but ideal for an intimate conversation or discreet rendezvous

Venue Review by Gareth K Vile | 13 Oct 2006

The newest bar on the Edinburgh scene, Deep Blue is hidden beneath the Blue Moon Café on Broughton Street. Lacking decoration and lit by a soft blue light and candles, this small space is transformed into a sophisticated and fashionable bar. The staff are attentive and friendly: if the drinks are relatively expensive, they do serve a refreshing and palatable house wine. There are two areas: the standing-only bar and a bijou adjoining room with tables. Soft music plays through discreet speakers and the plain white walls generate an atmosphere of peace and calm. This is not the place for a rowdy evening, but it's ideal for an intimate conversation or discreet rendezvous. Although Deep Blue has not been open for long enough to have a clear identity, it is certainly catering to a confident, wealthy market: it's austere, scrupulously clean and slightly anonymous. It looks set to become a popular location for the discerning drinker seeking a quiet alternative to The Street.
