Bunker

I’ll admit, I was a little dubious before my visit to Bunker: in my experience underground venues all too often turn out to be dark, slightly shady nightspots with little to offer apart from a sticky floor. But on entering Bunker, in the middle of Glasgow's bar-heavy Bath Street, nothing could have been further from the truth. Instead, I discovered a great contemporary venue, still fresh from last year's makeover, with comfortable seating (there are plenty of cosy booths) and cool lighting that seems to cast an attractive glow over everything – the perfect venue for a date.

From the easygoing demeanor of the staff to the relaxed surroundings, the place achieves a comfortably cool ambience without having that try-too-hard feeling.

A great menu selection is on offer, too – if you’re looking for value for money then you’ll almost certainly find it here. All main courses range from between £5 and £8 and you’ll get a plateful that will fill you up. The chicken caesar salad I ordered [£5.45] was crisp and fresh and my friend’s chicken burger [£7.25] was of immense proportions. They also do great food deals throughout the week – all day every day, you can get soup and a sandwich for less than a fiver, and if you stop by on a Tuesday or a Thursday, all drinks are only £1.40. Great credit crunch bargains!

Bunker has a good range of DJs in over the weekend, playing a boogie-tastic mix of indie and pop – perfect for stopping by before heading to a club. Although, to be honest, since it’s open until 2am at weekends, I’d be more than happy to hunker down in the Bunker for the whole night! [Susan Anderson]
