An Afghan plan

New enterprise Saraswati aims to offer uncompromised style with faultless ethical credentials

Consumerism now comes with a conscience. In recent years, fashion entrepreneurs like People Tree have cornered the fair-trade market. A-list bag designers 'do' organic. Even Marks & Spencer has a clothing range that aims to be ethical. Whilst materialism gets a makeover, a unique project on Edinburgh's Canongate invites you to add some soul to your shopping.
Saraswati, an Edinburgh University Settlement Group initiative, sells indigenous handmade goodies from Afghanistan, with proceeds going directly to building schools and funding the development of education programmes in the Islamic Republic.

Fur-lined boots, traditional Asian dresses and exquisite hand-woven rugs, at a fraction of boutique prices, make up the fabric of the shop. The collection is steeped in stories from a country whose creative voice rarely gets heard. Stirring up interest is Dan Gorman, shop manager and hands-on patron of the Afghan plight. "The shop acts as an important link between the two cultures," he explains. "We want to encourage everyone to get involved. Volunteering is essential to our success." Gorman has spent time in Afghanistan, where he was impressed by the fervent energy of small scale groups working against intense hardship. Here, he hopes volunteers, shoppers and artists can generate interest and action.

"The space offers an opportunity for artists to exhibit in a meaningful environment," says Gorman, alluding to the invitation for local talent to showcase their work. Currently on display in the shop is a collection by Edinburgh-based design label Warriorwares. The colourful leather cut-offs and crowns have a tribal subtext, rich in cultural connotations. Saraswati is a super-chic charity collaboration. It may not be on the High Street, but it should definitely be on your conscience. [Diana Kiernander]
