The Witch director Robert Eggers returns with The Lighthouse, a wild-looking two-hander starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson

Back in Cannes, there were plenty of films that got critics excited: Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, CĂ©line Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to name three. Perhaps the buzziest title, though, was The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers' follow up to his horror hit, The Witch. The Skinny's critic in Cannes, Iana Murray, called it "a relentless piece of maritime madness".

Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe star as two lighthouse keepers (or wickies) going stir crazy on a wind-lashed island. As well as the leading men, the most appealing aspect of The Lighthouse looks to be its startling visual style. Shot in black and white in the boxy 4:3 frame ratio of early cinema, visually it looks like a throwback to earlier times. The film looks anything but quaint, though. The newly released trailer suggests we're in for a surreal, wild ride, which includes Dafoe at his most intense ("why'd ya spill yer beans?" he chants ominously) and Robert Pattinson punching an octopus.

The Lighthouse is released in the US on 23 Oct, with the UK release still to be announced
