After the critical and commercial disappointment of Jeremy Renner's brief foray into the Bourne franchise The Bourne Legacy, reports circulated that Universal were desperate to reel in their boy Matt Damon for the fifth installment. With Paul Greengrass – director of 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum – back in the director's chair, Damon has been tempted to reprise his most famous role as the titular CIA assassin gone rogue.

From the first trailer, it looks like Damon has slipped back into the character with ease. Now with total recall after piecing his life together during the first three Bourne films, he seems to be living a quiet existence as a bare-knuckle boxer – interspersed with some PTSD flashbacks – like Rambo in Rambo III. But just when he thought he was out, Julia Stiles as ex-CIA operative Nicky Parsons resurrects his old crusade. "Remembering everything doesn't mean you know everything," she says to Bourne. "Tell me," is his predictable response.

The rest of the trailer suggests this is going to be another breakneck, action-packed installment, with Bourne again on the run and after the truth. A few fine actors turn up in the trailer to class the place up, in the form of relative newcomer Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl), alongside veterans Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassel.

Still riding high from recent hit The Martian, Universal will be hoping that having Damon in the title role again will tempt back the fans of the initial trilogy. What do you think? Will you be first in line for Jason Bourne, which hits cinemas 27 June? Let us know in the comments below.
