Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo reunite in horror Velvet Buzzsaw

Gyllenhaal and Russo star in Dan Gilroy's horror set within the LA art world

The first trailer for Netflix-bound horror Velvet Buzzsaw sees Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo reunite with their Nightcrawler director, Dan Gilroy, in what looks to be a satirical look at the LA art scene. Gyllenhaal plays a vicious art critic who has little good to say about the art around him until, that is, he’s shown some beguiling oil paintings by an unknown artist who’s recently died. “Who did these?" Gyllenhaal's critic asks Zawe Ashton's character, who discovered the mysterious artwork. “They’re messmeric.”

This artist's paintings take the LA art world by storm, although the rich patrons snapping up the posthumous work are sure to have buyer's remorse when the creepy canvases begin to move out of their frames.

Gyllenhaal’s character seems even less well-balanced here than the vulture he played in Nightcrawler, and he looks to be having a grand old time hamming it up on screen like he did in Okja, the last Netflix film in which he featured. And he’s not the only one. The rest of the cast – who include Toni Collette, Tom Sturridge, Billy Magnussen and John Malkovich – also seem to be embracing the schlock horror. Take a look at the trailer in the player above or on YouTube here.

Velvet Buzzsaw is released 1 Feb on Netflix and in select UK cinemas
