Ever get a Gotham City vibe walking around Glasgow? Maybe you could imagine Batman apprehending a mugger by that noirish tunnel that passes under Central Station, or crouching mournfully in the rain next to some gargoyles in the Necropolis? Well, you might be able to see just that next month, as the newest Batman film will become the latest Hollywood blockbuster to be shot in Scotland’s largest city.

It was revealed in the Sunday Mail that The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as The Caped Crusader, will start filming in Glasgow at the end of February, with shooting already underway in London.

“Glasgow will be turned into Gotham City and, with the city’s architecture, it’s expected to look great in the new film,” a 'source' told the Sunday Mail. “It will also be the first time for DC fans to see the new Batmobile, so there will be lots of them prepared to stand in the rain hoping they can spot it.”

This mention of the new Batmobile suggests there might be some sort of car chase being filmed in the city. That's a sight and sound local residents should be used to, given that extended action sequences from Hollywood productions like Fast & the Furious 6, Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbes & Shaw and Brad Pitt zombie horror World War Z have been shot here.

Matt Reeves, who directed Cloverfield and two films from the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy, is the writer-director of this new film. Sharing the screen with Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne / Batman will be Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as The Penguin and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's loyal butler.

You'll be able to see how well No Mean City doubles for Gotham City when The Batman arrives in cinemas in June 2021.
