It’s taken a while, but the MCU has finally given the coolest member of the Avengers – Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow – her own standalone movie. The first trailer for the film, titled simply Black Widow, arrives today. It suggests the MCU will be dipping its toes back into the paranoid thriller territory – a genre they proved particularly adroit in with 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Black Widow appeared in The Winter Soldier too, but the only sign of her old Avenger buddies in this new trailer is in flashback. Instead, the KGB assassin turned superhero looks to be teaming up with several mysterious characters from her past. There’s Florence Pugh’s character, who Romanoff calls “sis”; Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff; and David Harbour as The Red Guardian – Russia’s equivalent of Captain America, who’s clearly been eating a tad too well since the end of the Cold War.

The film is directed by talented Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) and will be released 1 May. Take a look at the first trailer in the player above or on YouTube.
