Best of Later... With Jools Holland 2000-2006

Film title: Best of Later... With Jools Holland 2000-2006
Yet another compilation of performances from Jools Holland's eclectic music show, this time dealing with the last seven years of Later... Looking at the playlist, you may start questioning the use of the prefix 'The Best Of...', as you will likely have a nostalgic harking for performances not present, and a sneer at some that made the grade (Robbie Williams. Hmph.). Also, it sacrifices it's position as a 'sign of the times' collection by including recent revisits of old hits like Pearl Jam's 'Alive' (but in saying that, the same thinking allows for a rare viewing of Toots and the Maytals' brilliant 'Pressure Drop'). The DVD's raison d'etre is then thrown completely out of the window by it's second-thought inclusion of 'bonus sets' outside the remit, like PJ Harvey's 'Down By The Water' and Joe Strummer doing 'London Calling'. So forget the title, look at the sleeve and judge for yourself whether there's enough there to merit watching, just as you would with the TV listing for the show. [Alec McLeod]
