Questions posed early about character and morality - for example that age old quandary of whether the end justifies the means - are never properly explored

While placed within the all too familiar cops and robbers setting, 36 provides a few twists to make it, at least initially, worthy of your attention. The fantastic action-packed beginning is backed up by a wonderfully tortured storyline, yet unfortunately, two-thirds of the way through, the film is let down by an ending that is all loose ends and quick fixes. Questions posed early on about character and morality - for example that age old quandary of whether the end justifies the means - are never properly explored, the film instead opting for the easy answers. The performances throughout are solid and there are some truly tortured moments, which makes it all the more depressing that the film finishes so unsatisfactorily. [Xavier Toby]
