John Ross: Return of the West End Ned

Article by Edward Whelan | 25 Mar 2009

John Ross suits the small upstairs room of the Buff Club with his easy, conversational comedy. The audience are gathered close to the low stage where he paces, telling tales of the weirdos he meets around his home town of Glasgow, rich in dodgy characters. He has a blokey humour that went down well with the women who loved the stuff about wanking as much as the fellas did and is at ease on stage, swiftly dealing with someone talking loudly backstage with a good shout at ‘em to shut up and got a round of applause for it. Filling the time with short snippets from his life and the irritations of children, he only seems to lose his footing when it comes to saying goodnight; the show peters out rather than reaching a definite end. But he keeps the audience merry throughout and we’re still chuckling as we head back downstairs to the pub.
