Kid Canaveral at SxSW: Enter, His Royal Folkness

Today was a slower day. It was our first show as King Creosote's backing band at the Domino Records Showcase at Emo's in the evening. Our afternoon consisted of having a brief run-through of the set, minus Kenny (Anderson, King Creosote). We were all pretty uptight given the fact that it's one thing to mess up your own songs (we haven't, yet) but another thing entirely to let someone else down. We'd only had five hours of practice time with His Royal Folkness before coming out here, and while his regular bandmates may say this is a wealth of time, we were only just comfortable by the end.

Kenny's manager, Derek, took us out for a very tasty steak dinner and recounted his trip to Madison Square Garden the previous night, to see his old client, Elton John. The list of Celebs backstage was hilariously varied, and A-list. Our hangover from the previous nights celebratory drinks after our rather smashing Showcasing Scotland gig had subsided and now we were beginning to get 'The Fear'. We took the stage at Emo's and started with King Creosote staple 'Homeboy'. Everything went well and after the song I did look up to see that the venue had now began to fill quiet considerably to about a thousand or so folk. Yikes.

I don't really know what else to say about the show. It definitely wasn't the most comfortable I've ever been onstage (nothing to do with the number of people there, just the frantic desire to do Kenny's songs justice) and while I enjoyed quite a few of the songs I would say I spent most of it feeling pretty anxious. The Domino Records folk, Derek, Vic Galloway and the crowd all seemed to thoroughly enjoy it, which was a relief, and hopefully we'll improve on it tomorrow as Kid Creosote at the second Showcasing Scotland gig. A lovely gentleman turned up in a specially-made King Creosote and Kid Canaveral t-shirt, which let's face it, is awesome.

We drank Margaritas and played football with someones discarded "WOO! SPRING BREAK!" beach ball. A man next to me and Kate at the bar worked his teeth around the top of a can of beer and tore the top off. Hmm.
