At the Illusionist's Table @ SWMS, 25 Aug

Review by Emma Ainley-Walker | 28 Aug 2015

Scott Smith’s At the Illusionist’s Table is a smart, sophisticated storytelling and magic show in the stunning surrounds of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. A new version of the show that began in 2013, Smith’s ability to captivate and hold a room has only improved, as he brings together a table of fourteen strangers over whiskey, food and story.

It’s a new show for 2015, and although some illusions are similar to previous shows, they also showcase how Smith has improved, disguising even more how a trick is performed, and creating a bigger sense of wonder. The food, and its connection to the tricks, is the real showstopper of the evening, beautifully produced by James Freeman, and for fans of fine whisky this show is a perfect way to get inside the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and taste some of what they have to offer.

Smith’s stories touch on memories and the past, and he knows how to use everything around him from the candlelight to the whisky to pull what he wants out of his audience members. It is a unique festival experience.
