Vladimir McTavish: The Top 50 Greatest Scots Of All Time Ever Part Two

Review by Rose Wilkinson | 18 Aug 2009

The clue as to the quality of this show is in its title: it's pretty funny, but goes on a bit too long and starts to run out of steam towards the end. Paul Sneddon's alias, Vladimir McTavish, is an appealing take on the sterotypical griping Scot, and he starts with some nice quips about how his people are perceived by other nations. He shows a slideshow of the best-known Scots in the USA, mostly fictitious characters and people who we would never associate with Scotland, and moves on to a reasonably funny spoof TV documentary about Scottish culture. But then he goes back to the slideshow again, and betrays the fact that he doesn't quite have enough ideas to fill the hour. The audience is small and to be fair to Sneddon, the show might gather more momentum with a few more punters in. But his lack of physical energy and off-handedness of manner mean that he can't quite raise the energy levels in the room once they start to flag, and his jokes aren't quite punchy enough to really get us going.
