Superclump

Review by Rose Wilkinson | 26 Aug 2009

Sketch shows are all about having fun – and there is no doubt that this is what the Superclump team are doing with theirs. The performance may not be as polished as it could be: there is plenty of corpsing, for example, but we forgive this instantly, partly because it seems often to be caused by some ingenious ad-libbing, and partly because the aim of the whole affair is clearly for everyone to have as much fun as possible, including the actors.
This is not to say that these eight individuals have not worked and thought hard for their spot at the Fringe. A great many clever ideas have gone into this show, and we are regaled with all kinds of novelties, from the ambitions of unsprouted potatoes to a human representation of some body parts to some rib-aching credit crunch special effects.

In classic sketch show style, some sketches end leaving us laughing uneasily, wondering what the hell has just happened – only to be resolved to tumultuous applause in a later scene. The linking characters and topics which run through the show appeal to memories from our childhoods as well as centring on seemingly boring contemporary themes such as the recession, pulling and “banter” with such innovative wit that they have the crowd roaring with laughter.
