Sarah Millican's Not Nice

Review by Chris McCall | 13 Aug 2008

Sarah Millican at first glance appears to be the opposite of not nice; in fact you could say she looks positively homely. With her sweet Geordie accent and her initially quiet demeanour, you could be forgiven for thinking that she was probably once employed as a nursery nurse, or some other job involving young children. You would however, be utterly wrong. “I really fucking hate kids,” she tells us matter of factly. This comes shortly after she lets slip that she considers herself to be “a bit of a cow.”

After all initial preconceptions are swept aside, Millican sets out her stall. Her show is about divorce and dilemmas faced when putting one's self back on the market after a lengthy relationship has ended. “People say divorce is like bereavement,” she quips, “but it's not. Nobody died and I got my mortgage paid off.” Her show is by no means a bitchy tirade against men, however. Far from it. Millican's material has the entire audience - men and woman, young and old - rolling in the aisles.

Much of her material is pure filth, but that's not a bad thing. You quickly get used to the regular references to her you-know-what, and it's not long before you realise what inspired the show's title. Here's a hint, it's not her persona.

Whether you are bashful or not, this is a great show. Millican's delivery is fantastic, and her jokes are well structured and perfectly paced. In short, she is a real talent.
