Come Flyer With Me: Steve Day

Flyer- Definition :

1. a person or thing that flies or moves very fast

2. a small handbill

Every year a small rainforest is cut down and set to Scotland’s printers so that people walking up or down the Royal Mile can be given pieces of shiny paper, some containing words in a language not of their knowing, into the nearest bin.

I am not by nature one of life’s flyerers. Firstly it involves standing in the rain. The weather of the Lothian region somehow becomes linked to my flyering patterns, so I can guarantee rain when I walk out with my bundle. I should go and flyer in Ethiopia. Secondly there’s sometimes a feeling of pointlessness as you thrust into the hands of a passerby knowing there’s probably a less than one in a thousand chance of them coming to see your show, and thirdly being on at The Stand is a marvellous thing but there really isn’t a great place to flyer round York Place that wouldn’t mean giving your show info to a load of bankers responsible for the worldwide recession. With all this in mind I have had to use my ingenuity, as I hope you will see.

My Show is about running the London Marathon, which I did raising money for Hearing Link, a small charity looking after people with hearing problems for whom speech is the main form of communication. Any exposure for them is helpful to say the least. For that reason I offered them the reverse side of my flyer to put a little bit of their info on. This looks quite good, is in keeping with my show, and gives me a nice feeling that I have done a good thing.

No, not that I’ve been generous or anything, more because now I have a team of committed, enthusiastic, and most importantly free charity people to give out my flers in the rain while I watch Bargain Hunt.

Run, deaf boy, Run is Steve Day's show at Stand II every day except the 15th. It's at 1.10pm (after Bargain Hunt).
