Come Flyer With Me: Jen Brister

The key to flyering is this: smile, remain upbeat & don’t be disheartened when someone tells you to take your flyer and shove it horizontally (not vertically) into an orifice that frankly would struggle to contain an A5 glossy photo of yourself. In short my advice is: DON’T BE YOURSELF. On more than one occasion whilst flyering for my show in 2008 I pretended to be Australian. Why? Because no one in Britain questions why an Aussie would be upbeat, we expect it. "Ah those Australians with their sunny disposition, upbeat ways and irritatingly positive outlook on life.” Flyering as an Aussie was the best thing I ever did. People were actually asking me for a flyer!

Three days of this and I thought I’d cracked the code. That is until the day I flyered a group of Australians.

“Mate! Whereabouts in Australia are you from?”

“Me? Er…” I didn't panic, I’ve lived in Australia. “I'm from Melbourne.”

“No way! We’re from Melbourne! Whereabouts?"

I said the first suburb I could think of. “Er…I’m from…Richmond…”

“Far out! That’s where my Uncle lives! What are the chances! So, what school did you go to?”

“School? Er, it was called…Summer Heights…High.”

“…that’s a TV show.”

They didn't take the flyer.
