Pre-Christmas Pop-Up Shop Guide
Our pick of the pop-ups!
'Tis the season to be jolly and buy stuff. Does the idea of trudging down the high street among throngs of spent shoppers to acquire mass produced knick knacks fill you with dread? Not to fret. Pop-up shops are popping up all across Scotland in the run-up to Christmas. From high fashion knitwear to home made Christmas cards to festive hairdos, hundreds of artists and designers will make sure that this year, your presents will all be equally unique.

29-30 Nov and 13-14 Dec, £1.50 (£1.00)

Recoat and Saltmarket design will turn the RBS branch on Gordon Street into an exhibition space with works from Russell Dempster, Jennifer Argo, Euan McWhirter, Kirsty Whiten, Lucy MacLeod, Shona Guthrie, Fraser Gray and Little Dot Creations. Apart from marvelling at their creations, visitors can buy works of art and design.
7, 14, 21 Dec
Purveyors of big hair, Blow on Finnieston Strip have all your festive needs covered. On 7 December, nail artists from Swoon and DIY Nails will join the hairsmiths of Blow, and on the 14th, Heenatastic will be there to cover you in temporary tattoos. Bebaroque, DIY Nails, Georgia Wiseman, Stella & Dot, Wonky Woolies and Dear Green Coffee are all joining on 21 December for a last-minute pre-Christmas pop-up show-down.
Grey Wolf Studios Christmas Sale
For you night owls out there, Grey Wolf Studios on Craighall road are hosting a cosy evening of Chistmas shopping (with snacks!) on 12 December from 5-9 pm. Products are supplied by Alison Macleod, Alistair Dearie, bakery47, Cecilia Stamp, Fun Makes Good, Garnet McCulloch, Hilary Grant, Katy West, Laura Spring and Tom Pigeon.
Tea Green Makers Market
14, 21 Dec
More than 30 local makers of jewellery, clothing and other things you don’t need but want will set up shop for two days in The Lighthouse. If that doesn’t sound excellent, which it definitely does, try the free mulled wine.
Limited Edition Store
1 Nov-31 Jan
Scotland Re:Designed realised something was missing in Ocean Terminal and decided to fill the void with a huge pop-up store. Limited Edition features 21 emerging luxury brands offering a range of clothing and interiors with items such as hand printed silk scarves, bespoke shoes and laser-cut jewellery by designers including Katie Lees, Helen Ruth, Obscure Couture and Prints of Paradise.
Catherine MacGruer Pop-up
27, 28, 29 Nov
Knitwear designer Catherine MacGruer will be offering her fine wares in the Made from Scotland shop on Rose Street from the 27-29 November. For the occasion, she’s expanded her range of delectable merino blankets with a range of bold, graphic cushions, scarves and hot water bottles.
To make sure Rose Street won’t find itself in a slump after Catherine MacGruer has left, number 115-117 will see local creatives, including Edinburgh-based label Fiona Heather, offer their wares to the public on the 5, 6 and 7 December. Find the perfect hat, necklace, pillow or frock among the creative output of your fellow citizens.
3D/2D Craft Fair
More homespun goodies will find their way to shoppers in the George Street Assembly Rooms during the 3D/2D Christmas craft fair on 6 and 7 December.
Remarket Christmas Market
If you’ve had enough of overpriced mulled wine and hats that look like animals, try the alternative Chirstmas market organised by Saltmarket Designs and Recoat Designs as part of their Remarket programme. Their transformation of the RBS on St Andrews Square may leave the site’s essential activity of money grabbing unchanged, but from the 11-18 December you will receive local design in return.
Hillstreet Design Pop-up
The beautiful Hill Street Design House will host a pop-up sale from the 12-18 December. Resident designers Patience Jewellery, Karen Mabon and Maggie Mowbray millinery will be joined for the occasion by artists Judy R Clark, Hilary Grant, Christine Clark and Hatti Pattisson.
Tea Green Makers Market
Scores of designers will flock to the Malmaison boutique hotel on the waterfront for the first of Tea Green’s makers’ markets. Among the makers on show will be Kerrie ALDO jackets, Mitchell & Black textiles and numerous jewellery designers including Pretty Vexed and Lucie Hunter.
