The original ‘Cafe Couture’ in Paris was a comfortable and relaxing place where like-minded Parisians would meet to enjoy a cup of coffee and some traditional delicacies, while improving their sewing skills and sharing ideas for new garments. This month, a little piece of Paris will be brought to Lady Lawson Street, in the heart of Edinburgh, with the opening of a new and exciting sewing studio, Materialise.

Materialise will channel the original Parisian sewing cafe by offering a creative and interesting space to those passionate about sewing, allowing them to come together and enjoy some fresh home-bakes and mugs of coffee (or whatever you would prefer) while improving their skills. Anyone with a love of sewing is welcome, whether a complete novice or skilled seamstress. Materialise also offers budding fashion designers the chance to hire top of the range Singer sewing machines by the hour.

The cosy and friendly space is also available for private sewing-themed parties or events, with Union of Genius and Hula on call for catering. Materialise will also stock a wide range of fabric and sewing supplies with a regular calendar of workshops running for those interested in learning new techniques, or just to improve their knowledge. With products sourced from quality local Edinburgh suppliers such as Artisan Roast and The Chocolate Tree, customers will be well looked after.

Fresh from their successful taster workshops at the recent pop up Stitch Lounge in Edinburgh, Materialise co-owners Brigitte Mulier and Reese Bucukoglu said: “Materialise will be a friendly and relaxing space for sewing enthusiasts. Our goal is to encourage people to give sewing a go and inspire everyone to make something they can actually wear or use and feel proud of.”
