Russell Kane's Gaping Flaws

Article by Cara McGuigan | 27 Mar 2009

I have a pet hate. It’s when comedians performing in Glasgow roll out material which is patently written for the Edinburgh Festival. Both Russell Kane and support act Ro Campbell were guilty of this tonight. Slagging off fat Yanks at the castle, jokes about Morningside – they’re either five months too early or seven months too late, and definitely 40 miles away. That said – and utterly contradicting myself – the funniest part of the dishevelled Aussie’s act was recalling his time as the Golf Sale guy on Princes Street.

Kane’s particular brand of bendy-backed schtick did indeed earn him an If.comedy nomination at last year’s Festival, and it’s certainly more original than Ro’s. His time as Five US’s poster boy apparently gave him abundant material, because his observations about the differences between Americans and Brits stand out, particularly with regards to dating and booze. However, on the whole, it’s just as well both blokes were performing to a merry crowd. As Kane’s performance would attest, drunk Brits are kinda easy.
