Jimmy Carr: Joke Technician @ The Alhambra, Dunfermline, 20 Jun

Article by Tracey S Rosenberg | 01 Jul 2009

Jimmy Carr is astonishingly unoffensive in his latest stand-up fest, Joke Technician. Well unless you're a Hollyoaks actor or Simon Cowell. Or someone who suffers from Alzheimer's, bullying, a speech impediment, or mental illness.

He’s a polished performer and he doesn’t skimp on the material. On the other hand, that material doesn’t develop into anything more than two hours of Jimmy Carr telling rapid-fire jokes strung together with dubious connections. A more accurate title would be “Jimmy Carr Talks About Lots Of Stuff, Particularly His Creepy Obsession With Josef Fritzl, And Tells Paedophile Jokes.”

The first half provides some stellar material, particularly his conclusions about the Church of Scotland debate over gay bishops. By the end of the show, though, Carr’s seated on a couch, offering jokes that were already old when that other Really Evil Austrian Guy was making headlines. Might as well just catch him on telly.
