Utah Saints & Erol Alkan, Triptych, Sugarbeat, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, 27 Apr

Erol mania hits the capital, as a sold out Cabaret Voltaire crowd can testify, joining the Sugarbeat residents Utah Saints for a Triptych spectacular. The warm up from the Saints is house-ier than the usual Sugarbeat style, perhaps to fit with their guest's style, or possibly just following the general trend of breakbeat DJs, like Evil Nine last month, favouring the fertile 4/4 fields. Whatever the cause, the capacity crowd are primed for the unofficial poster boy of electro punk's second coming, who lives up to his nu rave reputation, playing both his Klaxon's remixes amongst several old school classics. Disappointingly, though, he scarpers off early, leaving the Saints to finish what they'd started. Whilst the Utah Saints should be applauded for fostering one of Edinburgh's best club nights, they can't seem to escape the general malaise stifling the breaks scene at the moment, rounding off the night with tired breaks remixes of once great house tunes from Royksopp and Freeform Five, exemplifying the lack of inspiration blighting the genre.
