Replacing Claude Young, Rotterdam's finest Speedy J takes charge with a live set at Ego's resident techno club Jackhammer. Never one to be contained, his set is full of intricate breakdowns and varying styles, with Speedy knowing exactly when the right moments arise to mix up the pace a little. The small crowd don't seem to buy it though, and unfortunately a distinct lack of atmosphere stagnates the night. The visuals are pretty bog standard and tend to switch between flashing images of Joseph Stalin, noughts and crosses, Pong, and even some old skool Doom. Not Speedy J's finest Edinburgh performance to date, but the end of the night certainly makes up for the lacklustre feel, and the crowd are jerked back into life with Speedy's closing mixes, which shake Ego's powerful soundsystem to its core. Jackahmmer is still highly recommended for all those hungry to satisfy their monthly techno fix. [Natalie Doyle]
