Perspects - Peopleskills

Murky beats to wry pop to jumpy synth-rock

Album Review by Karen Taggart | 15 Jun 2006
Album title: 'Peopleskills'
Artist: Perspects
The music of Detroit-born Ian Clark has been making an impact for over a decade, most recently last year's smash 'Flesh and Bone' with The Hacker. Perspects is Ian Clark's biggest project to date, and this debut full length album incorporates a distinctive heavy vocal presence with live drums, creating punchy, analog synth-pop. This unrelenting LP quickly moves from murky beats to wry pop to jumpy synth-rock, and has been described as a "sinister affair." Throughout the record his early synth influences are apparent, and at times the music sounds retro indeed. Perspects does not align himself with any of the current trends in electronic dance culture, choosing to take inspiration from a broader spectrum of styles; but at times his music can sound too repetitive, with more than a touch of the 80s revivalist. Fans of Clark's earlier work will no doubt enjoy his debut album, at least for his desire to push the boundaries, but it isn't quite up to scratch. [Karen Taggart]
