March 2, Tokyoblu @ Ego, Picardy Place

I've always thought that Ego was an awkward space for the really hyped up club nights. The one room is just that, a room...with nothing wondrous or charismatic about it and with little potential for delivering something particularly grandiose. Tonight's house-grooved Tokyoblu is meant to be "the best club night in Scotland" however there had to be more than some thinking "This is it?". But the aglow deco is a good effort for what the atmosphere lacked and so is DJ George T-one energetic man on a mission to keep the beats reverberating though the floor and who is bewildering and exhuasting to watch. A wander downstairs to the annex is like discovering someone's cool and inconspicuous den with funky house music and a tranquil intimacy. Perhaps "the best" stuff happens with Tokyoblu's live band, which unfortunately does not happen this month but certainly sounds promising and more capable of fulfilling the club's inflated ambitions.
