Kid Koala, Mixed Bizness, The Arches, Glasgow, 6 May

While he never loses sight of the need to keep everybody moving, Koala's skills are as fun to watch as his chops are to dance to.

Boom Monk Ben opens proceedings, and plays for a while to a slowly filling room; his tunes are excellent, and everyone seems to stay once they find their way in. Beatboxer Mini Moo is excellent as usual - entertaining and danceable, with one of the best snare sounds the Skinny has heard out of a mouth. He makes full use of the deck-cam, mixing imaginary records and scratching the slipmat to his beats. From there, it's straight into three decks and into the bangers. Kid Koala's opening tunes are a statement of intent that he lives up to. His sense of a break and of fun are both in full effect: he's also brought along that old school presentation classic, a flipchart easel. With 'Can I get a HELL YEAH' scrawled on an A3 sheet, he manages to get the crowd eating out the palm of his hand. It's fortunate the screens are free too, as the DJ cam is more than paying for itself tonight. While he never loses sight of the need to keep everybody moving, Koala's skills are as fun to watch as his chops are to dance to. Finishing on Slayer and Rage Against The Machine, Koala leaves the crowd grinning and exhausted. [James Blake]
Kid Koala's album, Your Mom's Favourite DJ is out now on Ninja Tune.
