Album title: One + One
Artist: James Zabiela & Nic Fanciuli
Label: Ministry of Sound
Here James Zabiela collaborates with a slightly more mainstream DJ, Nic Fanciulli, producing one of the least cheese-ridden releases from MoS in several years. Zabiela's blueprint of minimal electro, emotive breaks and tough progressive house is padded out by Fanciuli's more bouncy, get-the-girls-dancing cuts, resulting in a blend of jump-up funky moments and more introspective musical epiphanies. Particularly pleasing is the inclusion of Funk D'Void's deep, pumping To Ya Waistline, and the disco-funk of The Way We Swing, by Crazy Penis. These two tracks stand cheek-to-cheek, illustrating perfectly the two poles that Zabiela and Fanciuli operate from. Less of a compromise, then, and more of a soundclash with the edges smoothed. Certainly nothing to bother the neighbours with – this is Ibiza-friendly dinner party music, not dirty techno after all. Finally, points off for clearly mixing this on computers. If you can't get it up with Technics and a mixer, you shouldn't bother! [Bram Gieben]
