Hot Chip: Over and Over

Club anthem? More apt as soundtrack to that last spliff of the night before falling asleep Ð on a weeknight at that!

Hot Chip's PR describe this track as "their seismic club anthem", but it measures minus 10 on the richter scale as a dance track, unless swaying gently is the new vogue. The opening bars are catchy enough in a laid-back way – and the opening lyrics of "laid back, laid back", warbled by Alexis Taylor are indeed spot on for this tune. The buzzy synth/guitar juxtaposition is pleasant enough, unfortunately interrupted by some irritating plinky plonks and chimes (maybe that's the seismic bit?) that jolt the listener just as they've been lulled into a trance. These guys have all the component parts, but they're not functioning at maximum on this track. Club anthem? More apt as a soundtrack to that last spliff of the night before falling asleep – on a weeknight at that! [Wendy Martin]
