Headman - On

An album that definitely needs a few listens to really appreciate what is going On - but the first listen will ensure that you return for more.

Album title: On
Artist: Headman
Label: Gomma
On' is an album filled to the brim with plenty of bass-driven punk funkery and vintage synths. Headman gets numerous vocalists to appear throughout 'On' whilst only appearing vocally on one track himself, the grinding, electro-tinged How Do You Feel. Soulwax and 2 Many DJ's Stephen Deweale lays down the vocals for pulsating first single Roh, whilst elsewhere on the album The Rapture's Matt Safer has a go on the understated bass mastery of Balearica. Non-vocal tracks include Upstart, an organic funk odyssey you won't soon forget, and Freedom Drums. The super camp So Disgraceful is mindblowingly addictive, with its refrain of: "Cause I don't want to / Oh no, no, no / I just want to / So disgraceful." The funky little sex romp Moisture is also a gem, both guaranteed to remain implanted in your brain longer than is necessary. An album that definitely needs a few listens to really appreciate what is going On - but the first listen will ensure that you return for more. [Natalie Doyle]
