Golden Bug - Barbie's Back

It's like Robyn if she wasn't so pleasantly pop, or Princess Superstar if she was less verbose and hung out with dorkier boys

Single Review by James Blake | 10 Jun 2007
Single title: Barbie's Back
Artist: Golden Bug
Label: Gomma
A-side, Barbie's Back, is squib-stab-heavy electrobeat, liberally sprinkled with the almost obligatory dirty chatter that all the best e-pop drenches itself in these days. It's like Robyn if she wasn't so pleasantly pop, or Princess Superstar if she was less verbose and hung out with dorkier boys. The b-side, St. Tropez is a breathy affair, but still very much in the e-pop style. Bonus track Disco Sensation is an instrumental, but feels less suited to a club atmosphere: you can tell why it wasn't an a - or even a full b-side. It would be harsh to give this single no praise, but it would be impossible not to mention how little it does to challenge the well-travelled ear. [James Blake]
