Rare moments of sonic clarity from devastatingly body shaking bass

Article by Keira Sinclair | 10 Jun 2007
Listening to dubstep on computer speakers is incomparable to hearing the bass rumbling up Holyrood Road before even entering The Bongo Club – thanks to the Electric Eliminators soundsystem. Finally some proper heavy dubstep hits Edinburgh, and is well attended by punters - hopefully a new breed of bass lovers are taking on this forward thinking sound, including shock horror, a girl or two! Gravious and Monochrome (both reasonably local boys) get things going with laptop sets that make all the hooded heads bob. Monochrome in particular is worthy of a mention, pulling out rare moments of sonic clarity from devastatingly body shaking bass, and setting things up for the more leftfield end of dubstep that Pinch purveys. His sound is realized as much in the 'plates of Andy Stott/Burial as the cavernous, bass heavy tunes of DMZ and Skream. DJ Distance loses momentum at the start of his set and perhaps shouldn't be the man to close the night, but by the time the lights are up the bouncers are forcibly turning off the mixer. Ears are ringing as the brain recognises the damage caused, but it's most definitely worth it. [Keira Sinclair]
