Cookin' On 3 Burners' musical skill, enjoyment, enthusiasm and sheer damned determination positively explode out of the stereo. The group hail from Australia's demanding live jazz and funk scenes and their training pays off in spades here, as note after raw note pummels the skull to get the listener's attention. In turn this gives the record a wonderfully old-fashioned feel on tracks like The Burners' Jam; retro bass and percussion instruments really come to the fore. This is an album designed for the club audience - but for all clubs, be they soul, jazz or rave. The sound of the Hammond organ dominates, with authoritative notes and meaty central parts ensuring the tracks have great range and great ambition. This bodes well for a glorious career.
