Music for the head and the feet

Get Physical (Berlin based record label started by DJ T) celebrate five years of pushing the boundaries of deep tech-house sounds this year. Rolling out the best of their stable they jostle for position at the Slam Bank Holiday special amongst other big names like James Holden and Kid Koala. DJ T warms up the arch for Booka Shade, who holds as the main draw for most of the crowd. Unfortunately Booka doesn't live up to their stellar recorded output – losing a lot of the progressive and warm elements of their sound that have made their deep and melodic tunes dancefloor hits, but there are moments of joy - namely the iconic Body Language combined with a frenetic light show. James Holden draws a far smaller, but devoted crowd in the back arch. Using three CDJs and an effects box, Holden constructs a collage of sounds. Following on from his recent mix album, At The Controls, this emphasises the experimental, ethereal nature of his sound - creating something similar to a classical composition piece, weaving layers of sound and eroded beats over resonating chords.
