Hybrid, Chew The Fat!, The Sub Club, Glasgow, September 1

In many ways, Hybrid can be seen as the missing link between today's breakbeat scene and the emotional tech-house/trance of the mid to late 90s.

September sees another of the legendary Chew The Fat! parties coming once more to Glasgow's premier venue, The Sub Club. The last party saw Fat! Records label-owner Paul 'Trouble' Arnold playing out to a rammed Subbie - he returns this month along with Bradley C, in a supporting capacity, welcoming internationally acclaimed breaks artists Hybrid (AKA Mike Truman & Chris Healings) to the decks.

Hybrid are one of the older breaks acts on the scene - the epic construction of tracks like Finished Symphony and Snyper were heavy on the use of strings and soaring female vocals, leading to regular play from DJs like Sasha and Oakenfold. In many ways, Hybrid can be seen as the missing link between today's breakbeat scene and the emotional tech-house/trance of the mid to late 90s.

Unafraid to flirt with trance, but always providing a hefty break on which their ethereal, cathedral-esque melodies can ride, Hybrid transcend their chosen genre with the strength of their songwriting, their imaginative use of collaborators' vocals, and the epic sweep of their productions. Their DJ set will be a rarity in modern clubbing - a true musical journey, rather than a set of repetitive beats. A recent appearance at Edinburgh breaks-haven Sugarbeat confirmed their status as two of the true Daddies of the scene. Prepare to be blown away. [Bram Gieben]
