Bulleit Originals: Marlena Shaw @ The Caves, 30 Jan
Bulleit Bourbon brings another of its 'Originals' live music events to Edinburgh this month, and with a pledge to showcase pioneering musicians alongside their contemporary peers, we're looking forward to this one. These events are designed to explore the influence of soul and funk on contemporary music, and the event on Friday 30 January at The Caves will feature performances from original soul legend Marlena Shaw alongside a specially created ‘Tribute To Soul’ set from festival favourite soundmaster Greg Wilson. Fingers crossed this bill - along with the eclectic DJ vibes of Jazzanova's Juergen and Edinburgh's broken-soul funk duo Digital Jones - lives up to our expectations.
FYI, Marlena Shaw was the first ever female vocalist signed to the legendary Blue Note Records and her career has spanned forty years. This massive career has seen her record and tour with Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr., as well as Ray Brown and Benny Carter, and her iconic soul vocal is perhaps best known on hit singles California Soul and Touch Me In The Morning. Shaw has an appeal that is timeless and she can count top DJs such as DJ Shadow, Diplo and Adam Freeland as fans that have remixed her work.
