Comic Book Guy: Kapow! Comic Con

Some people just don’t know when to stop. Not content with being the biggest selling British comic book writer of the last decade, spearheading his creator owed titles Wanted, Kick Ass and Nemesis towards the big screen, directing his first feature film and being ambassador for the superhero strand at the Glasgow Film Festival, Mark Millar also decided to put together a British Comic Con in his spare time. In an effort to rival the supreme dominance the San Diego Comic Con has over the industry, Millar was determined to rally the troops and showcase the comic book industry in old Blighty with Kapow!

If you’ve ever met Millar you’ll know he is as frank as they come, unafraid to drop an f-bomb and refreshingly honest about some of the meddling Hollywood types trying to engorge the comic book industry for pure profit. All this makes Millar the perfect ringmaster for proceedings with his standing in the industry being such that if he calls, people answer. And put out the call he did, to some of the biggest names in the comic book biz; Frank Quitely, Dave Gibbons, Andy Diggle, Jock and John Romita Jr. as well as his own CLiNT cohorts Jonathan Ross and Frankie Boyle.

With tickets still available this is the place to be for those shy of the airfare to San Diego, with both comic book fans and budding artists welcome. As not only will portfolios be under review from some of the industries leading talent, but Mark Millar’s meddling movie agents Creative Artists Agency (CAA) will be poking their noses around the con hunting down the next hot property. So what are you waiting for?

Kapow! Comic Con takes place over the weekend of 9 and 10 April at the London Business Design Centre, Islington; tickets are available here.
