Generator Members' Show 09 @ Generator Projects, Dundee

Article by Rosamund West | 28 Jan 2009

The annual Members' Show sits in the gallery programme amid solo shows by international artists, guest curated group exhibitions by the cream of the Scottish art world, and bespoke installations by local and emergent talent. Generator is to Dundee what Transmission is to Glasgow, or the Embassy to Edinburgh: an artist-led art space with a rolling committee and a commitment to providing the support and diversity needed to foster an engaged arts community locally and beyond.

The current show is, by its very nature, a vast, varied mixture of works in any and every medium. The open submissions policy means the standard is necessarily mixed, however stand-out works still shine through. Particularly worthy of mention is John Louden's This Is My Guernica, a banner enscribed “Welcome to the year nothing happened. Enjoy.” stretching across the large gallery from one corner, a table beneath displaying the remnants of a party in the form of spent party poppers, burst balloons and empty beer bottles. Tinged with sadness, the work represents a celebration of the end of bad things happening, the completion of the annus horribilus. Instead of the party to celebrate achievement, good luck, commitment, it symbolises a party celebrating survival, signalling renewed hope.

Another work which must surely touch all those who ever aspired to be on the Art Wall, or changed their Facebook statuses to Tony Hart RIP, is Rob Hunter's Morph – Love Heart, made by the artist and Perth Academy teacher in collaboration with his pupils. Multiple models of the legendary Morph are displayed, made in the days following the sad news of the TV legend's death. A poignant and fitting tribute to the man who inspired us all.
