Video Premiere: The Breath – For You

Watch the new video from Manchester's The Breath, taken from their debut album Carry Your Kin

Formed by ex-Cinematic Orchestra guitarist Stuart McCallum, The Breath combine Irish folk influences with diverse elements from their record collections, making for a sound that's warmly familiar yet aching with sorrow. There's a rare power to vocalist/lyricist Ríoghnach Connolly's gentle croon, lending poignancy to McCallum's subtly dense soundscapes – posited alongside the graceful slice-of-life monochrome of the video, it's a winning combination.

Drawing on themes of "birth and death, social struggle, motherhood and broken hearts", The Breath's folk-tinged oeuvre also carries echoes of jazz and ambient to create something which feels urgent in its softness, pulling at the heartstrings lightly but insistently.

Recorded in their hometown of Manchester, For You is taken from the band's debut album Carry Your Kin, released in April via the Peter Gabriel-owned Real World Records. Catch 'em on their UK tour in December.
