Ten Rapid: the best new music videos with Franz Ferdinand, Shit Robot, Johnny Cash and more

A week in music videos, with Franz Ferdinand getting in about some strawberries, Shit Robot bringing the disco funk, a posthumous Johnny Cash clip from John Hillcoat, Dum Dum Girls making a short film with Brett Easton Ellis, and more

Welcome back to Ten Rapid, where we showcase a selection of the week's best new music videos, as curated by The Skinny's music team. This week's playlist features a heady combo of rock, indie, hip-hop, punk, and even country, with tracks from Glasgow's Franz Ferdinand, DFA veterans Shit Robot, a new track from Johnny Cash, plus music from much-touted rising electro stars Machines In Heaven, Anticon founder Jel, Warp supremo Clark and more.

We start as we mean to continue with yer Franz Ferdinand, with the latest cut from Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. Fresh Strawberries is a jaunty little number, beginning at a balladic pace and then kicking up into a higher gear. The black and white video is directed by Margarita Louca, and the track features guest vocals from Veronica Falls' frontwoman Roxanne Clifford.

Next up, it's the new track from Alarm Bells - another Scottish contingent, formed from the ashes of the much-missed Dananananaykroyd. The brilliant de-rezzed quality of this video is explained thus: "What if a band from the 70's done a live AOL webcast in 1999 and someone ripped it and you downloaded it from them off KazzA at 0.7kbps?" they write. "It is a glitched-out, laser-fuelled live performance video harking back to a time when digital video was a mess of colour reduction and down-scaled interlace DivX conversions - a 56k dial-up nightmare." Sign us up immediately! It's taken from their EP Part One.

Upping the tempo next are LA hardcore punks OFF! with a video starring none other than Jesus Lizard main-man and confirmed oddball David Yow. The track's taken from Void You Out, and the video follows Yow around city streets as a superhero emblazoned with the legend 'USA'.. which eventually proves dangerous. The video was dorected by Chris Gismer.

An ambitious short film accompanies the new Dum Dum Girls track, penned by none other than American Psycho scribe Brett Easton Ellis, and directed by Brewer. The band's Dee Dee takes a starring role in the taut thriller, which leads into a rendition of the track Are You Okay?, from Too True

Signed to Broken Social Scene's Arts & Crafts label, Lowell present their new video, taken from their debut EP I Killed Sara V. The band produced and directed the multi-layered video themselves, soundtracking Palm Trees, a languid slice of melodic dream-pop.

MPC master Jel's new video, taken from the magnificent Late Pass, features animal mask-wearing hoodlums on the rampage, and Jel himself making a cameo as a hobo DJ who scratches with flaming dubplates. What more could you ask for? It's directed by Chloe Aftel and Jeremy Phillips. Jel supports The Notwist at Glasgow's Mono on Sunday 16 March

Next up it's the return of Warp legend Clark, with a euphoric, stuttering beat timed to the motion of an oscilloscope by directors Vincent Oliver and Steven Bliss. It's taken from Clark's new single, Riff through The Fog / Superscope, which is out today.

Things get a little funky next, as we move on to the new video from DFA's Shit Robot - their new album is out on 17 March, and this is its first single. Do That Dance is an immaculate slice of disco funk, with appropriately retro visuals.

Next up, it's the new video from justly-hyped Glasgow electro / post-rock experimentalists Machines In Heaven, who have just released their debut album, bordersbreakdown. They also took home Best Electronic Act at the recent Scottish Alternative Music Awards, and it certainly looks like they're in line for some wider attention in the next few months. The video is directed by Gary Roberts. If you're in Glasgow, catch the Machines lads tonight (Friday 14 March) at their album preview party at Stereo.

We finish off with a track from late country legend Johnny Cash, material recently unearthed by his son from a forgotten vault of music recorded in the 80s, with an accompanying video by director John Hillcoat (The Proposition, The Road). It's an atmospheric, monochrome video, the perfect accompaniment to Cash's gravel-voiced, iconic songwriting. The album Out Among the Stars is out on 25 March.

That's it for another Ten Rapid! If you want to cue up all of the videos, see below, or visit The Skinny's YouTube channel, where you'll find a tailored playlist of this week's videos, not to mention regular video premieres, exclusive sessions with the likes of Young FathersAidan Moffat & RM HubbertUbre Blanca, and much more!
