Stranger Things gets even more 80s in Season 3 teaser

It looks like a new mall in Hawkins, Indiana might be the centre for the action in the next season of Stranger Things

If you think Stranger Things couldn’t get any more 80s, think again. In the continuing adventures of the residents of Hawkins, Indiana, it looks like that most 80s of institutions – a shopping mall – will play a central role in the third series of Stranger Things, as hinted at by the new teaser trailer.

The promo takes the form of an extremely cheesy commercial for the Starcourt Mall, a new superstore that should liven up the sleepy town of Hawkins. “The Starcourt Mall has it all,” including The Gap, Claire’s Accessories and a food court offering hot dogs on a stick, and “it’s all just an escalator ride away”.

The food court does offer at least one more food option: ice cream parlour Scoops Ahoy. It’s “America’s favourite place to cool down,” we’re told in the ad, and eagle-eyed viewers might notice that fan favourite Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) is manning the Scoops Ahoy counter alongside newcomer Robin played by Maya Thurman-Hawke (daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke no less).

How this candy-coloured mall fits in with the spooky goings on from the first two series of Stranger Things is not clear. Maybe they’ve built it on the site of the old Hawkins Lab that got closed down at the end of season two and there’s still residual traces of the Upside Down in the store's foundations? Or maybe the story is set to head off in a whole new direction...

The good news is that it seems most of the cast will be returning alongside Keery, including Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Winona Ryder (Joyce), Noah Schnapp (Will), Caleb Mclaughlin (Lucas), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Natalia Dyer (Nancy) and Charlie Heaton (Jonathan).

No release date has been announced, but we can assume the “coming next summer” tease at the end of the Starcourt Mall trailer is a clue. Take a look at the teaser in the player above or on YouTube.
