Each week The Skinny team hand pick a selection of events from the Scottish cultural calendar to provide you with this guide to the most exciting goings on in the week ahead. From gigs, plays and exhibitions to spoken word and pop up cake shops, we give you the insider's guide to things to do in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee every Thursday morning.

1. World Gin Day
11 June, various venues worldwide

Some might think negatively of the fact that we're unable to agree on a single thing as a global community beyond collective celebration of certain liquors. But that's pretty pessimistic. Why not take full advantage of this gloriously botanical, ice cold, lime-garnished olive branch? Edinburghians, check out Edinburgh Juniper Festival at Summerhall (10-12 Jun); Glaswegians, swing by Hillhead's Gin Club (11 Jun, 12-6pm); or, alternatively, enjoy the hipster elixir at home with the help of our guide to homemade gin cocktails. 2. Film Fest In The City
St Andrew's Square, Edinburgh, 10-12 Jun, times vary

Whet your appetite for Edinburgh International Film Festival (15-26 Jun) this weekend with Film Fest In The City as St Andrew’s Square is transformed into an outdoor cinema with screenings of 15 movies, featuring everything from Mad Max to The Breakfast Club. And, of course, they’ll be screening Grease – a perfect opportunity to wail Sandy at the top of your lungs in the most fitting of settings.

3. Fruitmarket Design Market
Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh,
11 Jun, 10am-6pm & 12 Jun, 10am-5pm
Preview 10 Jun 5-9pm

This weekend The Fruitmarket fills two whole floors of exhibition space with its annual design fair. That means two whole days of perusing prints, jewellery, fashion, homeware and cosmetics from the likes of Caroline Dowsett, East End Press, CSWA_, Fiona Luing Jewellery and Lucky Cloud. There’ll also be workshops and talks, all organised to help you realise your dreams as a successful designer and / or crafter. How thoughtful!

If you’re looking for something a little different this Father's Day, the Paolozzi lager gift set is a great place to start. A tribute to Eduardo Paolozzi, the Scottish father of pop art, Paolozzi lager is the first beer from new, family-run microbrewery Edinburgh Beer Factory. Inspired by his principle of finding the sublime in the everyday, EBF have created a smooth, balanced and sparkling 5.2% lager beer. Gift sets and brewery tour vouchers are available for home delivery via Edinburgh Beer Factory's online shop and direct from the brewery in Bankhead.

4. P.I.Y Screen Printing Workshop
Hillhead Book Club, Glasgow. 12 Jun, 12-5pm

Sick of touting someone else's print work on your wall, tee or tote? Well, now's the time to change that. Head along to Hillhead Book Club's Print It Yourself workshop, a collaboration between WHO ART THOU and East End Press, and you too can learn the art of screen printing. Sink a beer, choose from a selection of local illustrators' designs and make your very own P.I.Y. Yay.

5. Kindness DJ Sets
Broadcast, Glasgow, 10 Jun, 11pm
Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh, 11 Jun, 11pm

The beauteous Adam Bainbridge (aka Kindness) returns this weekend, selecting songs and massaging souls in both Broadcast and Sneaky Pete's with his glowing appreciation of funk, disco and R'n'B. We caught up with him ahead of his visit to take a sneaky peak into his music collection, from Missy Elliot to Robyn – take a look here.

6. Glasgow Science Festival
9-19 Jun, times and locations vary

Glasgow gets all nerdy with its tenth annual Science Festival from 9-19 June, boasting a programme more banging than the squeaky pop test. The week's offerings include a Cheesy Science Chewtorial with The Roving Fromagiere on 10 Jun; a Cosmic Cabaret featuring space themed experiments and a remote-controlled Mars Rover on 9 Jun; and a live podcast recording with Simon Watt called Level Up Human which explores what it is to be a homosapien on 15 Jun.

7. Belle and Sebastian at West End Festival
Various times, dates and venues across Glasgow

Don't despair if you didn't nab tickets for Belle and Seb's live shows at GUU this month. As part of WEF, they're programming a series of events across Glasgow to ease the pain. Let Stuart pick your workout tunes as he DJs a punk aerobics sesh on 10 Jun, join in a mini movie marathon at Grosvenor Cinema on 11 Jun, or catch their specially programmed Sunday Social showcase at Òran Mór, featuring Teen Canteen, The Johnny 7 and Snowgoose. 8. Parquet Courts
La Belle Angèle, Edinburgh. 16 Jun, 7pm

Now onto their third studio album, Parquet Courts prove a keen eye for the creation of clever, stimulating but morish rock. Human Performance, released via Rough Trade boasts the playful poesy of Ought and escapist seashore riffs of Mac Demarco. However, the whole – far more than the sum of its parts – is well worth seeing in the flesh at LBA on 16 Jun. Image: Stuart Moulding

9. Bright Club: Science Special
The Stand, Glasgow. 13 Jun, 8.30pm

In honour of Glasgow Science Festival, The Stand's Bright Club capitalises on its knack for curating clever comedy by marrying together top comics and charismatic academics from Scotland's universities. Laughs and learning in one neat package = tick. Image: Kyle Smart

Married DJ duo club music veterans Tama Sumo and Lakuti make an appearance at Glasgow's Berkeley Suite this Friday as part of the club's HEALTHY series.
