What's On Scotland 25 Aug-1 Sep: Connect Festival & more
Connect Festival starts today, bringing the likes of boygenius, MUNA and Young Fathers to town. Elsewhere, Edinburgh Printmakers throw a Block Party and Buck Meek plays Glasgow
It’s a bold move to stage a relatively new music festival on the edges of Edinburgh at the end of August (your honour, we are all so sleepy), but Connect Festival’s programme is too good to miss, no matter how festival-ed out you may be.
Split over three days from 25-27 August, i.e. starting today (!) until Sunday, headliners are, respectively, Primal Scream, Fred Again, and boygenius. There's also slots by, *deep breath*, Young Fathers, MUNA, Future Islands, TAAHLIAH, Free Love, Bemz and Billie Marten. You can get a full weekend ticket, two-day tickets, or just for one day - check out the full programme here.
Taiwan Season: #Since1994
Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh. 2-27 Aug, 1:30pm
Every year, Taiwan Season at the Fringe showcases some of the most groundbreaking theatre and dance emerging from Taiwan. We particularly love #Since1994, a spectacular feat of circus and dance by an all-female troupe exploring ideas of female socialisation. Image: Eye Catching Circus.
Anoushka Shankar
Festival Theatre, Edinburgh. 27 Aug, 8pm
Anoushka Shankar’s music transcends genre, blending classical and contemporary influences and playing with the bounds of traditional Indian classical music. She returns to the International Festival with a quintet of cutting edge London musicians. Image: Vikram Kushwah.
Rachel Eulena Williams: Hair and Body
DCA: Dundee Contemporary Art, Dundee. 26 Aug-19 Nov
The first major solo exhibition by New York-based artist Rachel Eulena Williams, Hair and Body comprises painting, drawing, and printmaking that create bricolage works spread across the gallery’s walls, exploring the bounds of representation and meaning making. Image: Adam Reich.
Block Party
Edinburgh Printmakers, Edinburgh. 25 Aug, 6pm
As part of Christian Noelle Charles' exhibition WHAT A FEELING! | ACT I, Edinburgh Printmakers is hosting an American-style block party - find Enjoy Nigerian street food, a bar, and live DJ sets from Gemma Cairney, Junglehussi and Mojxmma. Image: 4AD.
↪ Buck Meek
Stereo, Glasgow. 27 Aug, 7pm
Buck Meek, the guitarist from beautiful indie band Big Thief, plays Stereo this week. Now on his third album Haunted Mountain, his music melds haunting, lovelorn lyricism with the gentle, dreamlike melodies his band is known for.
→ Marjolein Robertson: Marj
The Stand Edinburgh, Edinburgh. 3-28 Aug, 5pm
With the impressive title of Shetland’s only female comedian (if there are others, she doesn’t want to hear about it), Marjolein Robertson is well-versed in standing out in the landscape, blending surreal storytelling and introspective stand-up.
→ Sub Club's SoundSystem 2023
BAaD, Glasgow. 26-27 Aug
What better way to celebrate the end of August - before that back to school energy hits - than with Sub Club's SoundSystem 2023, a two-day all-day-and-nighter of dance music, house and techno held in the Barras Art and Design.
